The hot weather at Taunton Flower Show last week brought out the wildlife as well as the people. This dragonfly – a common darter – seemed to adopt us and was clearly very fond of our metalwork. For hours on end two of them were perched either on our tall rose / clematis towers or, as in the picture, on our half hoops. We’re not quite sure why they were so attached to our plant supports but they clearly had good taste.

How to tell that they were dragonflies and not damselflies? Dragonflies sit at rest with their wings out and their forward wings are very slightly longer than their hind wings.
